There’s something almost magical about collective nouns – they can seem to capture a sense of our relationship with the natural world that resonates on an almost primitive level. Woop Studios has really tapped into that magic here, with an A to Z of the phenomenon, stunningly illustrated and combined with fascinating facts and stories about the relevant creatures. There’s plenty to discuss in class; from why a ‘kaleidoscope’ of butterflies and an ‘ostentation’ of peacocks are so pleasingly apt, to whence on earth an ‘implausibility of gnus’ might have originated. Can your pupils come up with something better than a ‘hum’ of bees? And might they be inspired by the beautiful imagery to create their own original artwork for one of the nouns?
